I decided to check Wikipedia, because this of course lends a new layer of comedy to one of the all-time classic Monty Python sketches.
Wikipedia confirmed the story, but I decided to check the facts directly, so I followed one of the references, to The London Gazette where the name change was published:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This led me to the delightful discovery that John Cleese’s father, Reginald Francis Cheese, elected to change his name while living at 2 East Shrubbery , Redland, Bristol.
2 East Shrubbery!
There you have it. Now I’m left to wonder how many more Monty Python jokes were influenced by John Cleese’s family history.
